Theology is the study of God and Systematic Theology is studying the words of/about God on a particular topic. It is organizing the parts of Scripture in an orderly fashion around the particular theme to gain understanding of it. The Bible discusses a variety of topics, but they are scattered all across the books of the Bible. Systematic Theology helps us to categorize them so we can know everything God has revealed about it.
This is not merely an academic exercise, but it involves poring through the Scripture to know God, His nature and character, His purposes for mankind, His actions towards us, our nature and identity, our actions towards Him, and our ultimate goal in Him. We are called to be of sound doctrine i.e., to have the right understanding of God and His works. The more we know who our God is, the more we will be in awe of Him. The more we are in awe of Him, the more we will worship Him and live to please Him. We will enjoy the good gifts He gives us and glorify Him with all our being.
